Ridge Junction Overlook

Missing an overlook sign. Very popular stop for access to the Big Butt Trail.

Balsam Gap Overlook

View the 800-foot Glassmine Falls as it cascades down the exposed rock face of Horse Range Ridge. A short, 0.1-mile paved path leads to a bench with additional views of the falls. At the base of the falls are the remains of the old Abernathy Mine, a mica mine that operated around the turn of the 20th century, along with the site of a former mica miner’s cabin. Mica was also known as “isinglass,” or simply “glass” by locals, which is how Glassmine Falls got its name.
